Brussels Declaration: Joint action by cities, regions, national governments and associations to encourage European legislators to support sustainable food public procurement

Brussels Declaration: A Call to Transform Food Systems Through Public Food Procurement

Buy Better Food, together with France Urbaine and several other organisations, wrote the Brussels Declaration, a joint action by cities, regions, national governments and associations to encourage European legislators to support sustainable public food procurement.

The Declaration was presented on the 15th of November 2024, during the event "Organic Food: Good food for farmers, workers, climate and the environment", held at the European Economic and Social Committee.

The Declaration builds on the Buy Better Food Campaign and the Freeing Public Procurement Campaign, which advocate for the transformative role of public procurement in reshaping food systems, presenting two concrete proposals:

  1. Establish minimum criteria for sustainabile procurement
  2. Simplify procurement criteria
