The pivotal role of sustainable public food procurement

Public procurement refers to the process by which public authorities, such as government departments or local authorities, purchase work, goods or services from companies. More specifically

→ by GREEN we meanprocure goods, services and works with a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle 

→ by SUSTAINABLE we mean seek to achieve the appropriate balance between the three pillars of sustainable development - economic, social and environmental

Therefore, Sustainable Public Food Procurement takes into consideration all dimensions of sustainability, taking a more systemic approach.

As part of the EU Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy, the European Commission will publish in September 2023 the Sustainable Food Systems framework (SFS law). This is an innovative umbrella legislation that aims to “make the EU food system sustainable and to integrate sustainability into all food-related policies.” Public food procurement will be one of the main components.
